Survey on the Causes of Migration.

Since early 2022, I am part of a DevLab@Duke team that designed and implemented a survey on the causes of migration in Guatemala. The main objective of the survey is to understand how climate change, economic circumstances (land ownership, job availability) and corruption shape people’s decision of migrating internally or internationally. Data collection is still ongoing.

Tasks:

  1. Developed the sample.
  2. Participated in the design of the survey instrument.
  3. Trained enumerators in Guatemala (June 2022).
  4. Performed data quality checks and remote supervision of the teams of enumerators.

Pilot study for my dissertation.

In the spring and summer of 2018 I designed and implemented a survey of my own. I developed the questionnaire, determined the sample, hired a team of 10 enumerators, trained them, and supervised them on the field with the help of a friend at a Guatemalan NGO called Guatecambia and the support of prof. Erik Wibbels.

I conducted this household survey (n=970) in 65 populated places located in 56 municipalities of 16 of the 22 departments of Guatemala. The resulting data and complementary informal interviews I conducted in the towns constituted the exploratory study for Chapters 2 and 3 of my dissertation project.
